Panax ginseng root (Aralaceae)

Ginseng has gained a worldwide recognition for helping many people to maintain excellent health, increasing ability to combat fatigue, stress and disease; thus making one less susceptible to ill health and age related disorders. Panax ginseng derived its name from the Greek word “panacea” which means heal all. This herb has been used with great success for centuries and is most favored for the following disorders: tuberculosis, coughs, nausea, diabetes, indigestion, kidney disorders, gout and rheumatism, suppurating sores, carbuncles, enuresis, insomnia, leprosy and radiation poisoning, weakness of the spleen, longevity and sexual indifference and impotence. Many believe that ginseng has an aphrodisiac property for maintaining sexual potency in the male. The root of the ginseng plant helps to stimulate immune function by increasing natural killer cell activity. It also helps to regenerate the liver and increases the rate at which the body absorbs life giving oxygen, thus making this process more efficient.

Panax ginseng is a complex mixture of triterpenoid saponins. These glycosides are divided into three different categories. They  are as follows: panaxin, a stimulant for the midbrain, heart, and vessels. Panax acid, a stimulant for the heart and general metabolism. Panaquilin, a stimulant for internal secretions. Panacin, a volatile oil that stimulates the central nervous system. Ginsenin, which lowers blood sugar.
