MOUNTAIN FLAX or PURGING FLAX

(Linum catharticum; LINACEAE)

Parts used: Herb

Therapeutic action:

Cathartic (laxative to simple purgative), demulcent, tonic, hepatic, anti-catarrhal.

Mountain flax is similar to senna, and by some it is preferred because it does not have the tendency to gripe to the same extent (it rarely gripes, but to make sure, add a little carminative or stimulant such as peppermint leaves). It is excellent for torpor of the liver, and is an effective anti-catarrhal agent.

Medicinal uses:

Torpid liver, jaundice, obstinate constipation, digestive problems, gravel, dropsy, muscular rheumatism, catarrhal affections.

Preparation:

Decoction, fluid extract, infusion, powder, tincture.
